If you were at the 2007 ABSW Commencement at Beth Eden, you’ll remember the powerful and challenging message of Ingrid Roldan-Roman. Ingrid will bring an update of her work in Central America and the blessings and burdens of life, faith and ministry in that region of the Americas.

Ingrid ministers in Panama through the Federation of Baptist Associations in Costa Rica. The area in which Ingrid lives and ministers is near the Costa Rican border. Her ministry extends to both sides of the border, encouraging churches and Christian leaders in Panama and Costa Rica. She is also involved in theological education through the Theological Center for the Caribbean, based in Limon, Costa Rica. The Theological Center of the Caribbean aims to renew local churches by responding to their specific leadership training needs and by promoting a holistic outreach in their communities.

Time to Renew Ministers Council Membership

Dear Greater Bay Area ministers and seminarians:

As you consider if you will join us at our Fall Gathering on November 19th, I also would like to invite you to join as a member of the Minister�s Council of the Greater Bay Area or renew your membership for the 2009 year.

Our membership year began on October 1st, but it is not too late to send in your dues. I will be collecting dues and passing out membership cards at the Nov. 19th Luncheon or you can also send in your dues to me by mail.

Please see attached our revised MCGBA brochure and the membership form for further instructions.

And please do not forget to RSVP for the Nov 19th event to Katie Choy Wong by Monday, Nov. 17th.

Dear Bay Area American Baptist Ministers … or, I should say: Dear Friends :)

On Thursday we will gather for our annual MCGBA Spring Gathering at New Life Christian Fellowship in Castro Valley where Katie Choy-Wong is the pastor. This gathering will blend our usual worship and fellowship with some very timely training in the area of “Ministry to Victims of Abuse.”

Currently, our number of registrations for this event is hovering in the low-mid 20’s. Our potential, on the other hand, is somewhere well above 50. While we know that this, like every season, is a busy time for you and your ministry, we do hope that you will make these occasional gatherings with your Bay Area ABC colleagues a priority. If ever there was a “by us, for us” organization, MCGBA is that organization. We formed and sustain this local ministers council because we believe that being together is enriching and strengthening to ourselves and the ministries to which we have been called.

If time limitations prevent you from registering for the whole event (and taking advantage of the .5 CEU), then drop in as you’re able (though if you’d like to stay for lunch, an RSVP today would be helpful for our meal head count). And if you’re simply not able to be with us for this gathering, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we do you.

Peter Yuichi Clark, Ph.D., BCC, ACPE Supervisor Associate Professor of Pastoral Care at the American Baptist Seminary of the West and Chaplain Administrator for Alta Bates Summit Medical Center

Biblical Hermeneutics of Liberation: Reading the Bible in Context
Dr. Gerald West

Dr. West will present a method for doing Bible study with grassroots populations that empowers them to read for liberation.
His text will be the biblical book of Job, which he uses to reach aids victims in South Africa.
This presentation will inspire and inform—you don’t want to miss it.

In the evening class session Dr. West will do a similar presentation on the Gospel of John.

Dr. West is Professor and Director of the Institute for the Study of the Bible in the School of Theology,
University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Dr. West will also be lecturing in the evening class session for Middler Colloquium.
All are welcome to attend this class session as well.
In between the forum and class session ABSW will hold its regular Monday night community dinner.
